Design and Technology
I’m Mrs Day and I lead DT at St Mary’s. It’s our mission to discover the inventor in every pupil through DT, inspiring their creativity and developing their problem solving skills. Our pupils are encouraged to be innovative, take risks (safely!) and learn from their mistakes.
Through the Kapow Primary DT scheme, the children learn how DT shapes our world, how to plan and create their own designs, and evaluate how well they work. We look in depth at textures, mechanisms, food tech and sculptures. Using a variety of contexts, tools and materials, our pupils acquire key technical knowledge and vocabulary.
We ensure that all children can access our curriculum by making modifications as necessary, for example simplifying instructions. Along with design, food tech is an important part of DT. Whether the children are making smoothies, building bridges or studying wearable tech, they are learning to be resourceful and preparing for the future.
