Explorers
Explorers is the name of our new provision to support a small group of children with high levels of need and on an individualised curriculum.
Purpose
The Explorers provides targeted, personalised learning opportunities in a small, supportive group, while ensuring children remain part of their mainstream classroom for the majority of the day. Children can attend three “exploring sessions” daily, returning to classes in between.
Structure and Staffing
- Children work in a small mixed‑age group
- Each child will attend with their usual 1:1 adult
- 1:1 staff are responsible for planning and resourcing activities for the sessions
- Activities should reflect individual needs while allowing opportunities for shared experiences
What the sessions include
Sessions should be practical, engaging and purposeful, supporting a range of key skills. These may include:
- Singing and rhymes – musical instruments
- Attention and listening activities (e.g. bucket time)
- Fine motor skills
- Sensory play
- Story time
- Art and crafts
- Construction and games
- Cooking
- Gardening
- Outdoor and physical activity (e.g. climbing, sport)
- Music and movement
- Sand and water play
The focus is on:
- Communication
- Engagement
- Independence
- Enjoyment
- Confidence
Transitions and consistency
To support predictability and reduce anxiety, we use consistent language: “Let’s explore!” "Time to explore!"
Use of visuals are used at all times (first/then)
Widgit symbols visually support the children to recognise what and where they are transitioning to, these are used to:
- Help children understand what is happening next
- Support transitions between the classroom and sessions
- Reinforce routine and sequence
- Reduce anxiety and increase independence
Key principles
- Children remain members of their class first
- The provision is flexible and responsive
- Activities should be purposeful but engaging
- Staff collaboration is essential
- Consistency (language, visuals, routines is key)
