I’m Mrs Whitbread, PE Subject Leader. The children at St Mary’s take part in a variety of sports in PE lessons and through events and opportunities from the Uttlesford Sports Partnership, such as Cross Country and Dance Festivals. I liaise closely with Mrs Hanna who supports the organisation of many sporting events.

This year, we had an inspirational visit from Olympic cyclist Alice Sharpe, and the children took part in a sponsored circuit event. The children had great fun and raised an incredible amount of money which we have used to purchase new PE resources.

We are currently developing the children’s physical development opportunities at play times and lunch times. The children have thoroughly enjoyed climbing and balancing on the new playtime equipment which has been wonderful to see!

At St Mary’s we use ‘GetSet4PE’ which covers a variety of sports, such as gymnastics, dodgeball, net and wall games, hockey, dance, yoga...etc. Every PE lesson builds on the children’s physical movement skills as well as their social, emotional and thinking skills allowing them to practise and apply them within fun activities and games.

Inclusion in PE

Our PE lessons are inclusive and staff adapt lessons for all to succeed in a supportive and safe environment. We have a wide range of resources to support lessons, including textured/sensory balls, colourful scarves, parachutes and a variety of gymnastics apparatus. St Mary’s promote good sportsmanship, which develops empathy, encourages appreciation and respect for all, instils discipline and develops character and healthy competitiveness.
