I am Mrs Colebourne and I lead Maths here at St Mary's. I really enjoy teaching maths, solving mathematical problems and really getting into the understanding of how maths works and how different areas of maths link together. It is really important to us at St Mary's that all children have the opportunity to succeed at maths, to see themselves as mathematicians and to develop an enjoyment of the subject. As well as teaching at St Mary's, I work with Venn Essex Maths Hub as a primary specialist, which allows me to work with other schools and with the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM). Through this connection we have been able to access high quality training and programmes that have allowed us to focus carefully on the development of high quality mathematical learning.

In Acorns Class we use Mastering Number as the basis of our maths curriculum. Mastering Number is an evidence-informed programme developed by the NCETM which focuses on developing secure foundations in early number sense. Alongside this we have developed a carefully sequenced programme for the teaching of pattern, shape, space and measure. For more information, please see the document below.

Maths In KS1 and KS2

In KS1 and KS2 we belive in a Mastery approach to the teaching of Mathematics. We follow the White Rose Maths scheme of learning and teachers tailor this to meet the needs of the children in their classes. To support children with developing fluency and a secure knowledge of number facts, we continue to follow the Mastering Number programmes in all year groups from Year 1 to Year 5. For more information about our curriculum, please see the document below.

Inclusion in maths

At St Mary's we believe that all children have the right to a high quality mathematical education and that all children, regardless of background, ability or language have the potential to become successful mathematicians. We believe in a Mastery approach to the teaching of mathematics, through which we work hard to ensure that all children have the opportunity to develop fluency in number facts, the ability to reason and problem solve, and to make connections between different areas of maths.

It is expected that the majority of children work and progress together meeting age related expectations. Children are supported through the use of high quality representations and resources, used to reveal the structure of the maths and support children with developing their understanding.

Children all learn in different ways and teachers monitor successes and challenges throughout each lesson, making adaptations where needed to enable children to succeed. The scaffolds given to each child are carefully chosen to support them in reaching the goal at the end of a lesson.
