History

I’m Mrs Rose, history subject leader, and I’m always delighted to see how history at St Mary’s brings the past to life for our ever-curious children.
Our curriculum is designed so that they learn how people, cultures and communities change over time. It inspires them to ask questions and think critically as they analyse historical sources, weighing up evidence to develop an accurate understanding of the events and people of the past.
Following the Kapow Primary history scheme of work, our pupils gain a rich knowledge of the history of Britain and the diverse world beyond it. They develop a chronological understanding so that they can place people and events in their time periods.
As they develop their skills, they undertake historical enquiries on topics ranging from the ancient Greeks to World War II. We use an adaptive teaching approach to ensure lessons are accessible for all pupils. Each carefully sequenced topic builds our pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the past and how historians investigate it.

In history, inclusion ensures that all children can access and engage with the past. We break down key concepts such as chronology and cause and consequence, and explicitly teach vocabulary to support understanding. Lessons include clear modelling, structured talk, and scaffolded tasks so all children can participate and work towards the same outcomes.
Our curriculum reflects diverse voices and experiences across race, religion, gender, social background, culture, and disability, helping all children to see themselves in history while developing respect and curiosity about others.
